[Typo3] typo3 and use of PEAR

I setting up a new webserver, and wonder if typo3 or any of the extension 
require the install of PEAR (PHP 5.0.4 install). (pear: the framework and 
distribution system for reusable PHP components)

Does it matter for typo3 if we use the 5.0.x or 4.3.x php installs?
