This defintely works. I'd initially failed to defined the 'layout' variable as 'FILE'.

Working fine now. Thanks for a fantastic extension. We were actually going to build our own so we could get more custom control over comments that were easily editable for less techially savvy users, but it quickly became a very large job. No point in reinventing the wheel.
