I just tested it. And it works smoothly. I created two new characters 
(uid 223 and 224). Then I added the Relation via IRRE. And the mm table 
was filled with 223 in field "character1" and 224 in field "character2".

Be sure to have this strange IRRE setup with foreign_label, 
symmetric_field, etc. vice versa (see previous post with the inline 
field config).

If you won't get a long send me a PM. Then I can send you the full 
extension. So you can compare 1:1.

Oops ... sorry. I think you are right. When I am editing the second 
record I created I get a reference to itself in the TCE form. But the 
database still entry looks fine (as described above). Seemingly just the 
tcemain gets a hickup caused by this config when rendering the form element.
