Ok, solved it. Tried this:

$TCA['tt_news']['ctrl']['sortby'] = 'sorting, datetime DESC';

but that didn't fly, so changed it to this and that works:

$TCA['tt_news']['ctrl']['sortby'] = 'sorting';
