[TYPO3-dev] Suggestions for triggering BE sprite generation

i as developer don't want to generate sprites from extension, i would 
simply change one css rule to use my "1" icon.

And there comes the question - where is the API for that? Should all 
things not first start with the API instead with technical details about 
how sprites are built?
