Sorry for the late answer, no sign of a financial crisis here, too much
work.
On one bigger site we have found that 80% of all db queries run against
"pages" and "sys_template".
Moving the TS to external files did parts of the trick, since inclusions
ran faster (not as fast as having ALL TS in one big sys_template record
though).
Plus:
Having ONE TS template including 500 subtemplates is fine, but as soon
as one of the subtemplates includes another template things get slower
and slower.
Rule of thumb:
Include on 1 TS template, split up as few as possible, but as many as it
makes sense.
