Many developers do not know about useful API functions. Nobody can know 
everything :)

Extbase comes from v5 world. I guess v5 developers are very far from v4 
now, so they forgot most of the existing API and just do it the most 
straightforward way :)

Code reviews and QA management in general is badly needed...
