[TYPO3-dev] Fork of an extension?

Hi All,

There is an extension, which we use a lot for our projects. The latest 
version of this extension is from 2006.

We developed some improvements and last week I sent it to the developer 
by mail and asked him to create a forge project.

I got no answer, so I think the developer isn't interested in developing 
this extension further.

What possibilities do I have? I'm disposed to take the extension key. If 
this isn't possible I'd rename the extension to another key. Is that ok?

I'd be grateful for any answer.
