I would look at the extension "linkhandler". It also supports links in 
other places than just the RTE. Configuration of linkhandler is also a 
bit more flexible to me.

Even if one needs to add your own logic to one of the tabs, using 
linkhandler as the basis for an extension would be better than to 
reinvent the wheel indeed!
