Basically you've got three choices:

1) request that the extension key be transfered to you. You become the 
new owner and can make all the changes you want. However you must feel 
okay with being the new maintainer of the extension.

2) fork the existing extension and release your own. Again you must be 
ready to maintain it. Solution 1) is better in this case, because you 
don't add an extension to the TER unnecessarily.

3) you do nothing and just live with your own version. It's a shame not 
being to share changes, but that's unfortunately what happens from time 
to time.

4) maybe I forgot some other possibility ;-)
