Hi John,
i took a quick look at your patch but my tummy tells me that we run into 
some problems.

Storing "pages" and "id" should not be sufficent, since the menu could 
be rendered differently  based on other conditions, this "pages" and 
"id" remain the same.
Imagine logged in users or TS conditions.
