I think that the migration tool is nice but not a must have as long as the 
installer can create a clean DB from scratch. If then everything runs fine 
(no SQL errors or weird behaviour) the converter is of interest, though I 
think no live copying is needed. Why not dump Mysql with one of the (not so 
new) compatibiliyt switches?
