Have a look at the extension "salutationswitcher" (and its predecessor
"oelib" as well as "seminars" and "sr_feuser_register" that use those
functions). They allow to define a prefix "formal/informal" that will be
appended to the key when looking up localized strings.
Example:
In the extension configuration, we have salutation = formal.
In the locallang file, we have:
label_greeting_formal = "Guten Tag, bitte wählen Sie eine Option."
label_greeting_informal = "Hallo, bitte wähle eine Option."
So the first string will be used when looking up the string with the key
"label_greeting".
Regards
Oliver
