I do not know about 5.1.x being very buggy, maybe it's so, I've never
investigated about it, so I guess you are right.
However, as a matter of fact, Red Hat chose to include PHP 5.1.x in
RHEL5, which was released just some months ago and will be the base Red
Hat release for a long time. Red Hat is one of the main Linux
distributions, very used worldwide. Moreover there are several RHEL
clones, like CentOS and Scientific Linux (which is developed and widely
used by the scientific community worldwide, including important
institutions like CERN, Desy in Germany, and SLAC at Stanford) which
include the same release of PHP as RHEL.
Requiring Typo to use PHP 5.2 will probably make the use of Typo in a
very large number of sites and environments very hard or nearly
impossible.
I do not know if there will be the chance for people to use PHP 5.2 on
RHEL in the future, maybe it's so. But at present I think the risk of
losing a wide market for Typo is really great.
I think this item should be carefully reconsidered in the roadmap towards
Typo 4.2.
Best regards

Claudio
