I saw the same problem for SuSE but it is turned out that there are 
official compilations of even PHP5.3.x for SuSE. I just had to set a 
different update manager URL. No idea abiut RHEL5 but SuSE provided 
default basic repository and specialized repositories if you wish try 
other versions of the software. They are all supported.

See if it is the same with RHEL5.

I think 5.2 was choosen because 5.1 may have short life + it offers some 
advanced features that we are going to use. Try to find if you can use 
5.2...
