great! A userfunc will do it I guess.

Although of cause using a certain syntax that points TCE to a field of 
another table might be easier and faster in some cases. You don't need 
the include of the class that contains the function etc.

Anyway... Do you think, it is also possible to change a 3.8.1 the way 
you changed the 4.0?

Haven't had the chance yet to inspect the PHP files you uploaded. 
Because I'd really like to write a patch for 3.8.1 as well in case yours 
wouldn't work there.
