First of all whenever we talk about generated graphics please remove all files
out of

typo3temp/GB/
and
typo3temp/menu/

clear both caches, and regenerate the image ... else you can't tell what exactly was
rendered now.

So please try it with gdlib2 = 1 if you have gdlib2 ....

please also send some links to resulting images
so I can have a look at what happens ...
