I contacted the developers of xajax to find an easier way to implement
updates. I hope this can be done fully automicially by a little script
that does some search and replace with regexpressions if xajax get's a
little prepared for this.

Your idea of having a general factory brings me back to the proposal
of an ajax service, where you can put different xajax impementations
behind. But I don't know enough of other solutions than xajax to
define a general service interface that works for all of them. The
interface I would design would still be a xajax clone.
