[TYPO3-dev] FreeImage - another imagemagick alternative?

FreeImage is very powerfull and I've looked at it a few times.
There is a wrapper [1] available for use of FreeImage in PHP, but this 
one is still very unstable, not finished at all and the development has 
stopped for quite some time, which you can see in the CVS of the project [2]
