Thanks a lot, Ingo & Bernhard.

For some obscure reason, I somehow always thought that the HEAD tag (or 
no tag at all) would always give me the latest code that is present in 
CVS...

Adding the appropriate tag resolved my problem (until the time the tag 
for the latest version will change to TYPO3_4-1 or something else).
