Maybe the solution is to cut some unneeded data from extensions.xml.gz.

I would get rid of:

1) <authoremail></authoremail>
2) <authorcompany></authorcompany>
3) <downloadcounter></downloadcounter>

I never use them (who do?) at EM and it is easy to find them at 
http://typo3.org/extensions/ if I will ever need them. A simple link to 
typo3.org/extension/ext_name/ will do the job.

I would consider getting rid of:
1) <description></description>

If I have the extension installed I know what is it for.


This may be a short term solution before the small version of 
extensions.xml will get bigger.
