Thanks, maybe I can help work on some of these issues when that time comes.

That's true. The side-effect of such an huge extension repository is
that it can collapse real quickly if we break backwards compatibility.
Therefore I would use 4.0 (or 4.5) version as an in-between step:
maintaining backwards compatibility, while adding the new API. We
declare the backwards compatibility stuff as OBSOLETE and try to get at
least the major extensions rewritten to conform to the new scheme. A lot
of documentation, "how-to upgrade my extension" will be needed in that
phase. So that in 5.0 we can remove this obsolete codebase, and already
start with plenty of good written extensions.
