When you are programming you alway rely on external conditions ....

If you write C you rely on the GlibC.

If you write PHP you most probably rely on compiled-in mysql support or
GDLib support

If you use Typo3 you rely on the installation of Image Magick ...


So I don't think relying on cron would be a "inacceptable requirement" - cron
is installed on every UNIX system I know - it is a complete standard ... and if
you really happen to let your extension run under windows you will surely find an
alternative to cron ...
