It would be easy to make it configurable and I won't hold you back from
supplying a suggestion - you even have CVS access so it will be easy to
make a modification, send me a unified diff-patch and ask if you may
commit it.

So:
- As long as you don't change the DEFAULT behaviour you can implement an
alternative rendering that is enabled by TypoScript
- Provide documentation that can be copy-pasted into the (non-existing)
manual.

... speaking about manual for css_styled_content, if someone thinks I
should delegate work, this is an opportunity...
