No. They make sense, if you need site specific changes. Usually I move 
all my code into XCLASSes rather than hacking the core or extensions.

But of course it'd be easier if we had more hooks. Anyway, hooks aren't 
the answer for all problems, but they're good for a whole lot of problems.
