Hi Martin,
thank you for the directions

i added the following code to my template:

"config.locale_all = es_ES"

so my system uses the  /usr/lib/locale/es_ES  locale files ...but... it just 
keeps displaying dates in english. I even tried other languages...

Would you say this is php related?
If there where any php errors when running the setlocale("LC_ALL", [value]); 
would i be able to see them?

Sorry for all this basic questions.
I'm just getting into this system.
