Is the foreign_table setting just for tables within the Typo3 database?  if
I want values from another database will I have to use the itemsProcFunc?

When you say to play around with the quickstarter, do you mean features of
this Typo3 instance, or specific plugins i.e. in the FC Bigfeet pages?
