yes, that mandatory <base href..> is cause of some inconveniences

maybe because of it, maybe because of the way extesions passes 
variables in several ways,
the most annoying side effect is that i was having big problems with 
forms and feEditing!
and then multilanguages (quite all my sites are multilanguages).. i 
keeped having "selected language" lost.., going back to home page...

i don't think that the "easy" way that Peter suggests is so easy and so 
complete.. i'd go for a (may slower but more effective) core 
restructuration to implement realurls and multilanguage...
