thanks a lot for that hint. It works great! To make it work in Firefox 
you will have to install the Show Old Extensions 0.1.3" extension:
http://update.mozilla.org/extensions/install.php/Show_Old_Extensions_0.1.3.xpi?id=49&vid=51

After that you can edit the mozex settings via Tools->Extensions.
