I think this is somewhat dirty as well, but it *is* this way right
now. If you upload a file during the file manager and then use it for
image w/ text or image CEs, the files get copied to uploads/pics/ (at
least here...). So you could process those files and the original
would be left unchanged (as would every image that is *somehow*
processed anyway, those go to typo3temp/).
