[Typo3-dev] BE: date not formated

I am working on a new plugin to display a cafeteria menu (tm_lunchmenu in
the repository).

Each meal has a date and that is the display item for it.  The problem is
that in the backend, the date is displayed as a timestamp and not a
user-readable string like "8-19-2004".  I have notice that other time/date
fields get formatted like this, and have not found a config variable that
changes this.

Is this a bug in typo3, or am I doing something wrong?
