After reading the whole thread here's my point of view:
As 3.6 RC2 is not really a RC if you follow the logic that says that RC
should be feature frozen, maybe we can skip an "official" 3.6 and go
directly to 4.0 considering those features (nearly in marketing/buzzwords
value order):
XHTML / Accessibility
UTF-8
New RTE (I know the magic behind but the marketing result is RTE will be
IE-independant! )
DBAL
Flexforms
CSS Style content
Tons of small and big enhancements
Updated documentation
Code cleaning
>From an outsider poitn-of-view, no one is awaiting a "version number",
people wants FEATURES and a clear way to promote the newest version of TYPO3
considering what's near completion is to go the 4.0 way.
We should not cancel 3.6 (looks bad) we just have to say loud and strong
that " The newest version of TYPO3, the 4.0 release, include blabla..."
On a side note for the future Kasper, you should really try to go RC once
not a single feature is added.
Also, from the exchange between Kasper and Monsieur Hinderink and few others
about those decimal, here's also my POV:
We can add a first decimal number for each big step like :
Versionning 4.1
Static publishing 4.2
LDAP 4.3
...
And when are we going to go 5.0 ? Easy... Once we got PHP5 compatibility.
And if versionning slips and finally come after PHP5 compatibility, let's
have TYPO3 version 5.1 !
BTW, I'm not saying that TYPO3 v 6.0 should await PHP 6... It's just
convenient *this time* and also make everything clear since PHP5 will soon
become a reality and since it can break so many things, TYPO3 should reflect
the fact that once it becomes compatible with PHP5, everyone knows it.
I'm not an early adopter but we can receive some heat once PHP5 is out and
we can already prepare the answer in that effect: "TYPO3 will be declare
PHP5 compatible once it reach version 5.0".
Let's move on... and look forward !
My 0.12 Euro
