[Typo3-debian] Call to undefined function: curl_init()?

Hi,

I've got a question  regarding a connection to online extension 
repository. I'm using sarge, mysql 4.1, apache 2.054, and php4. Also, I 
have typo3 quickstart 3.8.1 installed on my box.

The problem is when I try to connect to the online repository I get the 
following message:
"Call to undefined function: curl_init() in 
/var/www/typo/typo3/t3lib/class.t3lib_div.php on line 2080"

I've configured typo to use curl(curlUSe=1), and set up the proxy, and 
proxy username and password. Can someone tell me what seems to be the 
problem?
