[Typo3-debian] libgd problems

Hi,

I have libgd2 installed [also libgd1 and some other libgd related packages]
but typo3 is not picking it [or any other gd libraries] up in the install
wizard, also if i turn on gdlib using the relevant flag i get errors [which
i expected but tried anyway].  any ideas why this could be?
and I get this error too when viewing phpinfo() [option 6] if it helps:
Call to undefined function: imagetypes() in
/var/lib/typo3/typo3_src-3.5.0/t3lib/class.t3lib_install.php on line 797

I have a feeling this is more a problem with my current server setup rather
than the debian typo3 install and hope that one of you guys will know the
answer.
