powermail 1.6 is very old, so your TYPO3 must also be very old.
Not even only because of security reasons you should update your complete installation asap.

Powermail 2.20.0 (version from today) has an integrated calculating captcha. In addition there is an integrated spamshield - so a captcha is not needed to avoid spam.
