Hi,

Yes this was posted three years ago :-)

You need:
Waterproof and breathable snowboarding pants
Gloves that are abrasion resistant
A good idea are wrist guards, like those used for rollerblades
(make sure they fit into your gloves)
A helmet won't hurt, don't use a motorcycle one.

I don't think you really need crash pants and back protection, I also don't
think it can be rented.

Old news for advanced skiiers/boarders: If you go beyond the marked ski
area, a beeper, shovel and a probe and an idea on how to use it is
essential. Don't rely on Recco chips, you're chances to be found alive by a
rescue team are very slim.

Watch the daily avalanche bulletin for the area if you plan to freeride:
http://www.slf.ch/avalanche/rb42-dec.html (german, but the colours are
enough to understand what is going on)

The north-eastern exposition (directly facing the northern part of Fiesch)
of the Eggishorn is a well known avalanche-prone area, which is also marked
as dangerous. Simply don't go freeriding there, no matter how nice it looks.

Cheers

Daniel
