Hello,
as long as I remember internet access is "flat" this year. But wlan was
sometimes very slow, poor, buggy last year.
So who knows:
1. Is there network cabling or wlan already installed in the house?
Where? In the rooms, on the floors, only in the lobby/lounge?
2. Will we build our own wlan again? If so who will plan & coordinate
this (placing some APs with different freuquencies, cabling, WEP, DHCP, ..)
(I could bring my Linksys WRT 54G V2 and some rather good home-made
antennas)
3. If we build our own (w)lan. Do you agree on this routing-policy/prioriy:
VoIP: SIP/H323
Skype
DNS
SSH
VNC
Instant Messangers
Mail-In: POP3(S), IMAP(s)
HTTP(s)
Mail Out: SMTP(s)
FTP
Block: all kinds of file sharing (emule,....)
My WRT54G wlan-router can enforce these rules (QoS).
So all services needing a stable minimum bandwidth will have a fair
chance. ;-)
4. As JH said: we had a server. That makes sense. But URLs and accounts
weren't published very well. If you are interested I could bring a small
barebone-based 3GHz, 2GB, 400GB + 74GB at 10.000rpm (DB) one. I could
imagine these services for example:
- hosting your TYPO3 sites (close collaborated dev!),
- local TYPO3 extension repository (TER),
- streaming webradio (everyone can listen as well as upload his own MP3s),
- HTTP-Proxy (o safe some some bandwidth),
- photo-upload/storage/album
- BBS (blackboard)
- DNS cache (really usefull!!)
Who would need & use this?
But remember: our mission is to go on the slopes rather than hacking all
day & night. ;-)
See you,
Bodo
