Hi Folks,
I'm in trouble with the travel insurance in Denmark. The problem is that
I got a sheet of paper from the public health insurance in Denmark a few
hours after being submitted to the hospital. I filled it in, but
mistakenly crossed a field "Privat / Business" on the sheet. From there
everything went smooth, they arranged home transportantion and I didn't
have to pay for anything - just as you would assume it works if they
accepted the injury-report in full.
Now, when I came home I was asked to fill in yet another injury-report
(basically stating the same) because the one from austria usually was
delayed (to my great surprise because I couldn't understand how they
could run the case if they didn't have at least a fax copy from austria
at the time I was at hospital). Anyway, I filled it in, but crossed the
field "Private" this time because that was correct.
It turns out that the difference between "private" and "private /
business" is if they pay or not. So at this point they want positive
documentation that this trip really was private because they don't
accept that I was possibly not so cautious about the details when I was
laying there with a broken spine!
So what I did was to explain the case with this letter (translated from
danish):
<letter to healthensurance>
Character of the trip
I'm working as a freelance computerprogrammer and am in daily contact
with likeminded people around the earth via Internet. We have a
tradition to meet yearly at a social event in the Alps to snowboard and
nerd with out common interest, computerprogramming. The current stay was
of that type
What happened:
I originally crossed the field with combined "private/business" without
further thought about the technical definition of the term since I was
with "collegues" in the context. So that was what my impulses told me at
a time where I was lying in bed with a broken spine and thousand other
things to think about!
When I filled in the danish injury-report I had better time to answer
the question correctly and regarding the question of business activity I
have concluded that this is NOT the case. I have neither worked nor
participated in meetings with direct relation to my income as a
freelancer during the stay. Apart from that food, stay, liftcard, flight
ticket etc. was paid from my own pockets (not company deducted) plus my
wife and her friend participated (underlining the private aspect of the
tour). So the trip should be understood as a "ski-trip with collegues"
if I had been a regular employee and that can not be categorized as a
business trip despite the fact that the relations comes from the
business context. Therefore the correct field to cross was "Privat" at
closer thought.
I'm sorry about the misunderstanding and trouble for you.

Now the situation is that they want documentation that it really was
private.
- They suggest me that I send them a "mortage-bill" where it is clear
that I was on holiday at the time. Of course this is impossible since I
am my own employer / freelancer
- I can also send the bill from the travel agency - which is not
possible because I had a free stay!
- I can also send my plane tickets, but when I told them that my company
name would be on it since I booked julles as well and forwarded an
invoice to him that didn't matter - as if it did anyways because my
company name on the tickets doesn't say ANYTHING about whether it is a
private expense or not! That solely depends on whether it is deducted in
the accounting!
What I can give them is:
- 1000 photos of people drinking bears, snowboarding, nerding behind
computers and on some of these I'm on as well. They would be dated
between 3th and 5th january (but I don't think they accept this)
- I could offer the letter you see about where people like Rie, Tina,
Julle etc. signs that they agree with the explanation - however they
don't take that either I was told.
So as it is now, they cannot present me any possibly way (fitting my
circumstance as a freelancer, basically not having "a job") to prove it
was private and my tiny mistake made in the hospital bed now means I
might face a claim from them in the order of at least 5000€ but I am
afraid it will be much more.
Now, can any of you come up with other possible ways for me to support
my claim that *I* was on a private journey?

PS: Please don't write anything publicly to the list which does NOT
support my position because should they get a hold of this communication
they could probably use that against me since until now they have used
the most irrational details to support their case.
