Assuming you restarted apache after the modifications, I must say I'm a 
bit out of options at the moment.

Could you check you access and errorlog to see if something might show 
up in there?
How are the permissions on you're .htaccess? Is it readable by apache?

Maybe Christian has some ideas, but as said, at the moment I'm out of 
options :(
