Protoype is only a small tool without any widgets. Scriptaculous came in
when there was need for some effects. extJS came in when there was a
decision to have widgets. Maybe Scriptaculous is now obsolete. If so
Protoype can be cancelled as well.

As I have said, as extension author you can do what you want.
