IMO this is not finally decided yet. There have been some heavy
discussion about templating in TYPO3 within the dev-(core-)community lately.

4.2 core does not use smarty. AFAIK FLOW3 is experimenting with smarty
now to find out about it.

Sry, I dont't quite understand that question. Do you mean if
templavoila/automaketemplate will use smarty internally? Don't know but
of course *could* happen if somebody codes some it. ;)
