I'm a greenhorn when it comes to admin related issues, but maybe the 
recently released Ubuntu JeOS might be an option as it is a "combination 
of reduced size and optimized performance" and targeted at virtual 
environments.. Just an idea.

Maybe it can be hosted at http://www.vmware.com/appliances !? (just 
found out, there are already some TYPO3 images: 
http://www.vmware.com/appliances/directory/933)
A Torrent-based deployment sounds like a good solution to me as well.
