short version: i have no no idea.

since its some hash code the vocabulary of letters used to represent the 
hash may be differently chosen? java hash codes for example contain a 
lot of 'weird' characters and need to be base64 encoded in order to 
cross-platform them. they compare to nothing but java.

to me it seemed rather lucky mysql offers the same implementation as 
used in php. postfix seems to be different. the only authentication i 
could bring to work was cleartext auth (which only allows FE users by 
default).

in addition the mod-auth-maysql modules for apache dont seem to support 
the php-md5 strings. the debian one does, one from sourceforge does not. 
and so on...

but there is a chance i simply wrong with it :)
