yes, that's a quite complex feature although it might not seem like it at first glance. We need a capable transliteration mechanism which is capable of converting characters in both ways - and that's sometimes not easily possible:

from "å" to "aa" and then back to … "å" or "aa"?
from "ß" to "ss" and then back to … "ss" or "ß"?

Bastian has been looking into this for quite some time and it's still on our wish list. If you feel like pushing this forward, please feel invited to do so.
