I'm not wild about forums either, to be honest. However, I think there's
an important distinction between newsgroups and mailing lists. Few
people in my office routinely read the TYPO3 newsgroups because doing so
requires using thunderbird or some dedicate newsgroup reader (apple mail
doesn't do it, last I checked). Many people in my office subscribe to
mailing lists, which can be read by anyone with an email address.
The nice thing about google groups is that they are familiar and both
developers and users likely already follow other groups. You lose that
familiarity when you make people download a newsgroup client and
configure it to access the group. Not the end of the world, but TYPO3
and FLOW3 aren't so popular these days where it's number one problem is
figuring out how to increase the barrier to entry to keep down the
number of questions.
