Ok, it's probably still useful for a lot of people out there so thanks 
for sharing. For a platform independent version we could try 
implementing this in PHP - just like the bootstrap but without all the 
dependencies.. But then it comes really close to what we already plan 
with the "Initial Setup" Wizard [1].

We had that before, but it has to be kept up-to-date and from my 
(personal) experience: people working on Windows mostly do so because 
they can't make friends with Unix (e.g. my first step with a vbox based 
FLOW3 was entering a star too much, removing all sources) ;)
