Before going into the FLOW3 level, you might want to check following
probable things.

1. Check in your Apache error.log file to know more about the 500 error.
2. Most probably you might not be allowed to use Auth* directives in the
.htaccess file based on the Directory settings done in the vhost config.
So in this case you have to either enable the "AllowOverride AuthConfig"
in the vhost settings or add your Auth* config to the vhost file itself.
