Make sure to completely remove any old versions of PHPUnit first. The 
PEAR installer fails to do so when trying to update.
Then you can install it as described here: 
http://www.phpunit.de/manual/3.6/en/installation.html

You'll also need to install vfsStream:
http://code.google.com/p/bovigo/wiki/vfsStream
