Perfect for what? Perfect would mean its equally useful for all purposes which is unlikely. But if
the target is, say, enterprise software (ERP, CRM, etc) you'll get more realistic results.
I think that if you have a persistence layer you shouldn't worry about DB column types. If you need
to bypass the layer for (eg) performance reasons you will have to do any necessary mappings yourself
anyway.
And actually the default mapping of PHP classes to DB types doesn't matter that much if I can change
it if I want to. This is the real important point. The framework must me let my freedom in as many
choices as possible. And the storage format of a date/time value is such a choice.
