Thank you all for the responses (as I really had no idea where to start
looking).  Unfortunately I won't be back at my computer until next week --
so I will try out what is stated here then.  About the server environment:
It's CentOS using PHP5.3.x from a third party repository (so I suppose it is
possible that there is something broken in it...).
